Dolcetto di Ovada DOC is produced in the district bordering Liguria in the south, where the Dolcetto grape is so prevalent in, that it is also called Uva di Ovada (the Ovada grape). Although the type is slightly different, these wines are recognized as the biggest rivals to the strong Dolcetto cousins from Alba and Dogliani.
The red wine is based on the Dolcetto grape (97-100%) with the permitted addition of other local blue grapes (0-3%)
A robust structure makes it possible to store Dolcetto di Ovada DOC a little longer, and in some cases it has been possible to store the wines for 10 years or more. It is believed that this is due to the wind from Liguria in the south, which creates a drier climate in the area.
Dolcetto di Ovada DOC is a ruby red wine with purple reflections. The aroma is fruity, and the taste is dry, with a pleasant bitterness in the aftertaste. The type is considered little more textual than its other Dolcetto cousins and usually it has a longer aging potential.
A barrel-aged Dolcetto di Ovada Superiore DOCG is also available.
