In the early 1800s, the Grignolino grape was one of the most widespread grapes in the Asti province, yes, and it was actually the second most used in Piedmont. Today, it produces its bright, delicate wines which are somehow not in accordance with the times and not least with what the other red wines of the region are known for, namely robustness and durability.
Nevertheless, Grignolino still has many devotees who find its bright color, lightly acid-like fruitiness and slightly bitter and persistent aftertaste quite irresistible.
Grignolino d'Asti is the largest area of the Grignolino grape. It allowed the addition of up to 10% other grapes, providing a light and easy wine to be served young and a bit chilled. The color is ruby red and gets orange reflections after a few years.
The wines of the Portacomaro municipality usually have a little more depth and complexity.
