Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba Superiore DOCG (Diano d'Alba Superiore DOCG) is a red wine grown on 75 approved vineyards (crus or sorì's) in the municipality of Diano north of Serralunga. As a 'cru' or 'sorì', actually the first of its kind in Italy. Other regions now use the cru system as well.
The vineyards are not classified by rank (and probably never will) as in France, but any label bearing the name 'Diano' is a real cru wine from the zone.
The wine is produced on the Dolcetto grape variety, which is the same as the non barrel-aged Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba DOCG.
Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba Superiore DOCG can be compared with the best red wines from Piedmont. Locally, it is often compared with the Dolcetto d'Alba DOC wine in which area it is also grown, though as an independent zone.
The wine has a ruby red color and a fruity bouquet with hints of wood, as well as a dry, almond-like and harmonious taste.
Mandatory aging period of minimum of 10 months, beginning on November 1st of the harvesting year. Minimum alcohol content is 12,5%. Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba Superiore DOCG is released on the market on September 1st the year following the harvest.
That Italy in 2011 was the worlds largest wine producer?
