Dolcetto d'Alba DOC is probably the most popular Dolcetto wine and the area is also the largest of this type since more than half of the wine production is represented by Dolcetto. Most Barolo and Barberesco producers usually have a Dolcetto on the list.
Producers have managed to make a red wine of incomparable quality. The taste and style vary from vineyard to vineyard, but all wines are well balanced, soft, fruity and with great fullness.
Dolcetto d'Alba DOC is grown in the cool heights of the Langhe hills, where it thrives better than both Barbera and Nebbiolo. As a young wine, it has a deep mulberry color, and a touch of newly fermented grape in the fragrance.
The taste is rich and fruity with an almost chocolate-like sweetness though tempered by a kind of tingling bitter undertone. Generally, Dolcetto d'Alba DOC is enjoyed within 1-3 years.
There is also a Dolcetto d'Alba Superiore DOC, with a mandatory aging period of 1 year and 12.5% alcohol content.
