This DOC appellation was established in 1997 and covers the wines produced in the Valle di Susa, near Turin, west of Piedmont capital.
Valsusa comprises 19 municipalities, including Susa, located along the Dora Riparias river course.
At the beginning of the valley there are vineyards that go to the top of the hills, but as they penetrate deeper into the historic areas of Chiomonte and Exilles, the vineyards go higher and higher and become terraces on the cliff sides. From here, the vines have quite nice views of the valley.
The Valsusas vineyards are among the highest in Europe and the work on them requires some courage.
The red wine Valsusa is produced from Avana and / or Barbera and / or Dolcetto and / or Neretta Cuneense grapes (60-100%), with the permitted addition of local non-aromatic red grapes (0-15%).
The wine has a ruby red color with orange reflections, a fruity bouquet, sometimes with notes of wood. The taste is dry, balanced and moderately tannic, with good acidity and a subtle touch of wood.
Valsusa is highly suitable for regional dishes, including braised beef or chicken and the rabbit, chicken 'alla cacciatora' (Hunter chicken), Italian sausage, polenta and pork.
