This straw-yellow colored white wine has a vinous, slightly perfumed, characteristic aroma, with a dry, typical, rich, harmonious, full-bodied taste.
The basic grape in the Alto Adige Valle Isarco Pinot Grigio DOC is, not surprisingly, Pinot Grigio, locally called Rulander (85-100%), with the permitted addition of local white grapes (0-15%).
The label may also mention Südtirol/Südtiroler Valle Isarco Rulander DOC. If the mention “di Bressanone” (Brixner) appears, it means the grapes originate in the vineyards around the municipalities of Bressanine, Naz-Sciaves and Varna.
A “Riserva” type is also produced, when the wine is aged for a minimum period of 2 years, starting with October 1st of the harvesting year. The minimum alcohol content is 11.5%.
The wine is also available as “Passito” or “Vendemmia Tardiva” (late harvest), in which case the grapes are dried into raisins before pressing. Both types range from semi-sweet to sweet and they are rich and harmonious. The “Passito” type must have a minimum alcohol content of 16%, whereas the “Vendemmia Tardiva” is required to have a minimum of 13.5% alcohol.
Both types must age until June 1st of the year following the harvest before being released on the market.
If the label mentions “Vigna” (Gewächs or Wachstum), followed by the name of a place, it refers to a specific vineyard area or a “micro zone”.
Pairs well with fish, vegetable risotto and soft and hard cheeses.
That Italy in 2011 was the worlds largest wine producer?
