Trento DOC

Trentino was founded by the Romans and it is the melting pot of Italian and other Mediterranean cultures, art and history. For centuries, it managed to preserve its artistic and historical heritage, despite the change of influences between the Italian and the Nordic cultures, which reflects in Trento’s distinctive architecture.

Regarding the wine, there is a great openness to new ideas and to experimenting other winemaking techniques “imported” from other areas. One of these is the so-called second fermentation in the bottle (Metodo Classico), a technique which Trentino winemakers managed to refine, thus producing sparkling wines in this zone, which is quite something for Italian oenology.

Trento was previously under the appellation Trentino DOC, but in 1993 it produced its own DOC Spumante, and together with Franciacorta DOCG in Lombardy, were considered Italy’s best districts for sparkling wine produced through the Metodo Classico, producing 40% of the country’s total production of this type. The vines grow in an area covering 74 municipalities in the province of Trento.

There are three types of wine within Trento DOC: a sparkling white wine with a short aging period, a sparkling white wine with a longer aging period and a rosé type, all made from Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Nero and/or Pinot Meunier grapes, the choice between varieties being free.

Wine producers have made efforts to ensure the quality and to protect the production of sparkling wine through the Metodo Classico. It is for these reasons that, in 1975, six producers founded the “Instituto Italiano Metodo Classico Champenois.”

In 1996, the association changed its name to “Instituto Italiano Talento Metodo Classico”. At the same time, the Talento symbol was registered as a quality guarantee, used by producers to distinguish themselves from competitors Asti DOCG Spumante in Piedmont and Franciacorta DOCG from Lombardy.

In Trento DOC there are stricter regulations than those normally required by DOC.

If you are in these parts, you should indulge yourself with a visit to the famous and ancient Spumante house, Ferrari Lunelli. To many experts, their wines are among the best sparkling wines in the world.
