Alto Adige Spumante DOC is a common name for a sparkling white wine produced in the province of Bolzano, from one of the following grape varieties: Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Nero and Chardonnay.
This is a light straw yellow colored wine, often with green or golden reflections. The scent is delicate, pleasant and complex, while the taste is fresh, fine and harmonious. Moreover, the wine has a fine foam and persistent bubbles.
This sparkling white wine is also known as Südtirol or Südtiroler Spumante DOC and it is obtained through the Metodo Classico (Champagne method). The wine is either dry (extra brut) or slightly sweet (brut).
Alto Adige Spumante DOC has a mandatory period of aging in the bottle of minimum 15 months and it can be released to the waiting consumers only after 20 months from October 1st of the harvesting year. If the label mentions Alto Adige Spumante Riserva DOC, then the fermentation period is longer.
If the label mentions “Vigna” (Gewächs or Wachstum), followed by the name of a place, it refers to a specific vineyard area or a “micro zone”.
The dry type can be enjoyed as an aperitif, while the semi-sweet one can be enjoyed with dessert.
