Colli Bolognesi DOC(G)

South of Bologna we find the beautiful hills, Colli Bolognesi, where mostly the Cabernet, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and the Sauvignon grapes dominate the picture.

Colli Bolognesi DOC includes sub-zones (indicated on the label), which have more strict requirements. These zones include Colline di Oliveto, Colline di Riosto, Colline Marconiane, Monte San Pietro, Serravalle, Terre di Montebudello and Zola Predosa. Not all sub-zones use in the production process all the permitted grape varieties.

A multitude of wines in many varieties is produced in these sub-zones, including still red and white wines, Riserva, Frizzante, Spumante and other types. In addition to the aforementioned grapes, some other types are grown, including Barbera, Riesling Italico and, last but not least, the (almost local) aromatic Pignoletto, which accounts for half of the wines in Colli Bolognesi DOC - with or without bubbles.

All in all, these are quite excellent wines, but the ones produced on international grapes are the ones that attract most attention.

In 2010, the white wine Colli Bolognesi Pignoletto Classico was approved as DOCG.
