Sovana DOC

Sovana is the same area as the famous white wine, Bianco di Pitigliano, is grown in, but there are also promising efforts in red wine as well.

Red wine has been produced in Sovana since the time of the Etruscans, and the zone's fields are located in perhaps the prettiest nature in Tuscany. On the archeological front, the area is especially known for its ’Vie Cave’, excavated, Etruscan roads, leading to the old village of Sovana.

In the zone there are also old cellars buried in the tuff under the villages of Pitigliano and Sorano.

Sovana DOC covers the local red grapes, such as Sangiovese and Aleatico, along with imported vines like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

History and quality make up the most important ingredients in this quite new appellation (1999), and producers utilize the newest technologies as well as traditional methods.

The appellation covers the areas in the Pitigliano and Sorano comuni, along with parts of Manciano, bordering the neighboring zone Morellino di Scansano DOC.
