Orcia lies in Tuscany, in the southeastern part of the Siena province, and consists of 13 comuni. Actually, the zone isn't quite perfect for wine cultivation, but interesting drops come from the efforts nonetheless.
The zone, that gives its name from the Orcia River, lies in a stretch of land dividing two famous areas' vineyards, the DOCG wines Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
With its famous neighbors, Orcia has, as stated, been hard pressed and thus also been in danger of being forgotten entirely. After several years of neglect t, the wine producers decided to improve their cultivation methods and focus on quality. The result of their efforts came in 2000, when the zone received its own DOC.
As far as red wines go, the Sangiovese grape dominates and for white wine it's Trebbiano.
Some producers' wine has shown great potential, so it's definitely worth keeping an eye on Orcia in the future.
