Colli dell’Etruria Centrale lies in the Chianti district, and when these wines came to belong under the somewhat stricter legislation of the DOCG, many producers of quality wines were left in a bit of a pickle.
Unfortunately, the grape composition of the district's wines meant that they could no longer be called Chianti, and thus a new appellation was needed. They therefore established a new zone with its own regulations, and in 1990, Colli dell’Etruria Centrale DOC became a reality. It was now possible to produce quality wine from their own recipe.
Colli dell’Etruria Centrale includes a broad range of red, white and rosé wines, along with a Novello and two dessert wines, Vin Santo and Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice.
Regulations permit the area's Chianti producers to conduct a selection of grapes both during the harvest and in the cellar, and place a DOC label on the wine, which otherwise would suffer the fate of a regular VdT wine (Vino da Tavola: table wine).
Colli dell'Etruria Centrale represents an interesting alternative to the many wines produced in the Chianti region.
