Colli di Parma, covering 15 municipalities in the hills around Parma, is a zone classified as DOC in 2002. At the time, only 3 types of wines were produced, but the zone took its appellation seriously and the number of DOC wines grew to 14.
The hills are best suited for production of the full-bodied, fragrant and bubbly Malvasia, a sparkling white wine considered the best match for the famous air-dried ham, Prosciutto di Parma.
Many consumers may be surprised by the fact that the red wine of this area, dominated by the Barbera grape and also by the Bonarda, is usually bubbly and therefore must be served cooled. However, in the summer heat, this wine is a pleasure to enjoy.
Apart from the Lambrusco and the Spumante types, barrel aged Riserva types are produced for all 14 varieties, including the whites.
