Melissa Rosso Superiore is made from the same grapes as the unaged Melissa Rosso, namely Gaglioppo (75-95%), Greco Nero and/or Greco Bianco, Trebbiano Toscano [note to Peter : earlier referenced as Toscana rather than Toscano. The same grape variety? Google gives results for both.AC] and/or Malvasia Bianca (5-25%)
In common with its little brother, this wine can in many ways be compared to Cirò Rosso DOC and in fact many wineries produce wines in both zones. It doesn't quite equal the quality of its northern cousin however.
The colour is a light ruby red and acquires a more brick red colour with age. The fragrance is vinous and typical for this wine. The taste is dry, with good body, palatable and characteristic.
The obligatory aging period is two years and a minimum alcohol strength of 13% should be achieved.
Can be aged for up to 8 years.
Well-suited to roast dishes.
