Pollino is produced in the northern part of Calabria, on the southern slopes of the Pollino range, close to the town of Castrovilari in Cosenza province.
Pollino is an easy drinking red whose colour varies from light ruby to almost cherry, but which, in fact, has a more potent taste than its appearance would indicate.
Its taste is quite ample and dry, with a characteristic fragrance for this type.
The grape combination is Gaglioppo, (60-80%), Greco Nero and/or Malvasia Bianca, Montanico Bianco, Guarnaccia Bianca (20-40%).
A Pollino Superiore is also produced with an obligatory aging period of 2 years and a minimum alcohol strength of 12.5%.
Can be stored for up to 6 years, the Superiore for up to 8.
The unaged Pollino can be matched with most foods while the Superiore goes well with roast dishes.
That Italy in 2011 was the worlds largest wine producer?
