Considered by many experts to be the finest of Calabria's mountain reds, Savuto DOC is produced using a formidable number of grape varieties. These are Gaglioppo (35-45%), Greco Nero and/or Nerello Capuccio, Magliocco Canino, Sangiovese (30-40% with max 10% Sangiovese), Malvasia Bianca and Pecorino (max. 25%).
Savuto is cultivated on the terraced slopes of the unusually beautiful and picturesque Savuto river valley, southeast of Cosenza, near to the town of Rogliano in mid Calabria facing out to the Thyrrenian Sea. Production is modest and concentrated around the warmer areas of the valley between beautiful olive groves.
Its style varies from dark ruby red to almost pink and with greater or lesser body. The bouquet is distinguished, typical and with an unusually pleasing fragrance. The taste ranges from light berry to dark plum and is dry, ample, robust and by its nature, robust.
Minimum alcohol strength is 12%.
Savuto Superiore DOC is also produced with a longer obligatory aging period and higher alcohol content.
In its best years Savuto Superiore is a magnificent wine and widely acclaimed for its strength and body.
Unfortunately it's also quite difficult to track down.
Storage potential: up to 6 years.
That Italy in 2011 was the worlds largest wine producer?
