Castel del Monte is perhaps Apulia’s most acclaimed and famous wine. The name derives from the octagonal tower built by the Emperor Frederick II von Hohenstaufen between 1240-1250. The image of the beautiful and distinctive edifice often appears on the label.
The zone covers a dry and rocky area. The wines are grown in enclaves, where there is barely enough topsoil for the wine to get proper nourishment. For several years, the producer Rivera has been almost unchallenged, but strong competitors rear their heads.
