This semi-sparkling ruby red to purple colored red wine is grown in 13 municipalities around Modena, including the city of Santa Croce, in the north.
The locals consider Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce DOC as Modena’s table wine, but it may prove difficult to distinguish it from its rival neighbors’ Lambrusco types.
The main grape used for Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce DOC is Lambrusco Salamino (90-100%) and/or other Lambrusco varieties and/or Fontana (Uva d’Oro) with a maximum of 10%.
The taste ranges from dry to slightly sweetish and sweet.
A rosé wine is also produced under the name Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce Rosato DOC.
The dry type is best served throughout the meal, while the sweet types are best enjoyed with dessert or as an aperitif.
