The special name of this wine alludes to its former quite striking sharpness, coming from the tannins. It was said that the wine “cut the tongue” (tazzalingua: tongue-cutter. Read more about the grape in the grape section). The wine is made from Tazzelenghe grapes (85-100%), with the permitted addition of local red grapes (0-15%).
Today, Friuli Colli Orientali Tazzelenghe DOC is a dark, ruby red to violet red wine, which becomes very soft after 3-6 years of aging after which it takes on a garnet color. The scent is robust, tannic, herbal and dry.
Aging potential is 4 years.
A barrel-aged Friuli Colli Orientali Tazzelenghe Riserva DOC is also available, with minimum 11% alcohol content. The required aging is 2 years, beginning on November 1st of the harvesting year.
Searching long enough, one can also encounter a label with the name “Tacelenghe”, which is just a variation of Tazzelenghe.
