Friuli Colli Orientali Schioppettino DOC has often been called a red wine for the connoisseurs. The grape comes from a wild variety with a rather difficult name, Schioppettino (85-100%), but rest assured, the grape is also known as Ribolla Nera. It is permitted to add other local red grapes (0-15%).
The wine, grown exclusively on the hills around the municipalities of Albana and Prepotto in the southeastern part of the zone, and is considered a cult wine admired for its distinct, robust and almost rustic appearance.
Friuli Colli Orientali Schioppettino DOC has a scent of fresh berries and herbs, as well as a pronounced acidity, which decreases after 4-6 years, when the wine develops more depth and mellowness. The color is ruby red, but it turns garnet with age.
The aging potential is 4-5 years.
Enjoyed with heavy meat dishes.
A barrel-aged Friuli Colli Orientali Schioppettino Riserva DOC is also available, with minimum 11% alcohol content. The required aging is 2 years, beginning on November 1st of the harvesting year.
