The Squinzano DOC area is located in the lower half of the heel tip of Apulia and it is comprised of the Salento-urbans Squinzano, San Pietro Vernotico, Torchiarolo and Novoli and other municipalities in the province of Lecce. Grapes have been cultivated in this area since the 6th century BC.
Just as back then, the Negroamaro grape dominates, ranging in shade from ruby red to garnet red, with a sturdy yet soft flavor and a pleasant bitter finale. Because of these appealing properties and the variety’s almost black clusters, they were called by many “niuru Maru”, which, in the local dialect, was gradually changed to Negro Amaro or Negroamaro (black aromatic).
The green varieties for the white wines belong to the Malvasia family, which is of Greek origin and which arrived in Apulia from Peloponissos, particularly from the town of Monemvasia.
Squinzano DOC currently produces high quality red wines, based on the red grapes Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera di Brindisi and Malvasia Nera di Lecce, with a splash of Sangiovese, which dominates.
