Read moreIn Abruzzo's northwestern corner, in the Teramo province, lies Controguerra, one of the smaller zones in the region. It received its DOC in 1996, and since then the producers have put forth a tremendous effort to escape from the dominating Montepulciano grape's straitjacket.
In Controguerra, generally higher standards are required for the vinification of the red wines on the Montepulciano grape and the white wines from the Trebbiano grape than you see in most other zones in Abruzzo. Controguerra includes the municipalities of Corropoli, Colonello, Torano Nouvo, Ancarano and lastly, Controguerra, a little mountain village located approximately 440 meters (1,445 feet) above sea level, with the Adriatic Sea as a beautiful backdrop.
