Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC is a refreshing and full-bodied rosé wine (Rosato) made of the grape Montepulciano (85-100%) together with other local white grapes (0-15%). This wine can be extremely characterful. Its fresh fruit and acidity go perfectly with everyday pasta dishes and suppers.
Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC is named after the very brief contact there is between the grape skins and must (cirasce: local dialect for cherry), which indeed produces a distinctive, light, cherry-colored nuance. It has a pleasing, finely vinous, fruity, fine and intense scent. The taste is dry, soft, harmonious and delicate with an inviting, almondy aftertaste.
The best Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC wines are produced in the L'Aquila province and the wine is released for sale on January 1 the year following the harvest. Minimum alcohol content is 12%.
There is also a barrel-aged Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo Superiore DOC (earlier called Riserva). It has a pleasing, finely vinous, fruity and intense, even with spicy scent. The flavor is dry, soft, harmonious, delicate with pleasantly almonded aftertaste. Minimum alcohol content is 12,5%. Released on the market the 1st of January in the year following the harvest.
