The best known Salento DOC red wine, Salice Salentino Rosso DOC, is made from Negroamaro grapes (80-100%), with the permitted addition of Malvasia Nera di Brindisi and/or Malvasia di Lecce (0-20%). The wine is grown around the city of Salice Salentino, west of Lecce.
Salice Salentino Rosso DOC is an intense, full-bodied and velvety red wine, with a slightly bitter undertone and, if it originates from certain producers, it has an impressive aging capacity and durability. The wine turns brick red with age.
A barrel aged Riserva type is also available.
Aging potential is 6-7 years.
Among the Salento red wines, Salice Salentino Rosso DOC forms a class by itself.
