Salice Salentino Rosato DOC is made from Negroamaro grapes (80-100%), with the permitted addition of Malvasia Nera di Brindisi and/or Malvasia Nera di Lecce (0-20%), and is grown around the city of Salice Salentino, west of Lecce.
When young, the wine is fresh and floral, but as it ages, it turns into a deep, complex wine often considered as one of Italy’s most remarkable rosés. May sometimes be a little bubbly.
Leone De Castriis’s version, “Five Roses”, is particularly worth mentioning. The name suggests it would be a version of an American whiskey, which, according to the legend, would not be totally far-fetched.
As US troops advanced into Apulia during the Second World War, they found a rosé wine with a similar color to their beloved “Four Roses” bourbon whiskey. What they really found, however, was a full bodied Salice Salentino Rosato, which they immediately dubbed “Five Roses”, considering the wine deserved one rose more than their own whiskey.
A fizzy (vivace) Salice Salentino Rosato DOC, as well as a sparkling Salice Salentino Rosato Spumante DOC are also available.
With “Invecchiato” on the label, mandatory aging is 1 year before released on the market.
Aging potential for “Five Roses” from Leone di Castriis is up to 5 years.
