In Abruzzo, they've long struggled to develop more style and elegance in the region's Montepulciano-based red wines, and one of the interesting results comes from the Terre di Casauria DOC (Casauria DOC) subzone, where producers age the often course wine, by means of which they can soften the young wine's slightly rough character. Same process is used in the neighboring appellation Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Terre dei Vestini DOC.
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Terre di Casauria DOC is grown in the Pescara province and consists of 18 municipalities. The wine gets its name from the town of Tocco Casauria, and the wine is made exclusively of Montepulciano grapes (100%) from the vineyards in this subzone.
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Terre di Casauria DOC has an intense ruby color, with shades of purple, that as the wine matures darken to more granate hues. The aroma is intense and etherial with a hint of red fruit. It has a full, robust taste that is both harmonious and slightly tannic.
The wine has a mandatory aging period of 18 months, 9 of which should be in a barrels, and a minimum alcohol content of 13%.
If the wine has aged for at least 24 months on barrels and 9 months in the bottle, the name Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Terre di Casauria Riserva DOC will be on the label. Minimum alcohol content is 13.5%.
