This barrel aged red wine is produced from the same grapes as the non-barrel aged Primitivo di Manduria DOC. That means Primitivo (85-100%). It is allowed to add local, non-aromatic red grapes (0-15%).
Primitivo di Manduria Riserva DOC is ruby red with purple highlight and shades of garnet. With age, it gets orange brick hints and become orange-red. The aroma is full and complex, sometime with hints of plum. The taste is dry to full-bodied, characteristic and pleasant. The wine can also be slightly sweetish (abboccato). With time, it becomes very velvety.
Primitivo di Manduria Riserva DOC is at its best after 5-6 years. From certain producers, it improves after 10-15 years.
The wine must undergo a period of aging of 2 years in which at least 9 months in wooden barrels, starting from the 1st of November in the year of harvest.
To be enjoyed with sausages, roasts or, locally, with horsemeat.
