Copertino is a DOC in the southern part of the Apulia region, in the province of Lecce and especially around Copertino town, there are produced two types of red wine, dominated by the red Negroamaro grape which has long been recognized as one of the best grapes suited for the terroir in the “heel” of Italy’s “boot”, the Salento peninsula. The Copertino reds blend up with Malvasia, Montelpuciano and Sangiovese grape varieties.
Because of the temperature, southern Italy has been nicknamed “il mezzogiorno” (the midday) and with approximately 300 sunny days per year and mid-summer afternoon temperatures sometimes surpassing 40 degrees, the grapes develop quite high levels of sugar, and, therefore, subsequently high alcohol strength.
Obviously, wines here are robust and quite often tannic.
