The main grape in Montefalco Rosso DOC is Sangiovese (60-70%), a little bit of Sagrantino (10-15%) together with other local, red grapes (15-30%). The wine comes across as ruby red, has a vinous and delicate aroma with an aromatic taste and good body. This wine rarely goes wrong, especially in the versions where the producers have added a decent amount of Sagrantino.
The wine is meant to consumed while young, but, from certain producers, the wine takes on a fine class with age.
There's also a Montefalco Rosso Riserva DOC with a longer aging requirement and a higher alcohol concentration.
Well-suited for roasts.
Mandatory aging is 18 months and the shelf life is 3-4 years.
