Torgiano is a little zone stretching along the Tiber, southeast of the beautifully situated capital, Perugia. The fields are concentrated around the village of Torgiano, whose namesake is the tower of Janus, Torre di Giano, which dominates the small city.
The fields are approximately 558-984 feet high in the valleys surrounding the Tiber and Chiascio, and the region is blessed with the perfect combination of soil and climate, and the fields have exactly the right angle in relation to the sun.
Torgiano can thank top producer, Giorgio Lungarotti, for the outside world’s increasing interest in the zone’s wines. Things really picked up when he presented the winery’s Torgiano Rosso, which was elevated to DOC in 1968.
Later came alongTorgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG, which after Lungarotti’s considerable development, was elevated to an independent DOCG in 1991, thus becoming Umbria’s first DOCG.
The area in itself is not anything spectacular, but Torgiano has a very interesting wine museum owned by Lungarotti, and it is well worth a visit.
