Marsala Superiore DOC is a golden, ample dessert wine. The taste is dry or sweetish to sweet, but with its 18% alcohol concentration, usually rather dry with a taste of fat, nuts, lemon and spices. This is a very mellow wine, but it still has a distinctive, austere aftertaste.
The drier type, Marsala Superiore Secco, is very dry, with an aroma of trees, nuts, lemons and spices, while the aged Marsala Superiore Riserva is a positive experience with its inviting, dark amber color.
There is also a Marsala Superiore Semisecco (semidry) and a Dolce (sweet).
The mandatory aging period is 2 years in a wooden barrel. The Reserve must age for 4 years in a wooden barrel and has a shelf life of 20 years or more.
