Oak casks originating from Bordeaux, but which are widely used in Italy. They usually have a volume of 225 liters, but you may also encounter this term for barrels up to 800 liters (see Fusto). When the cask is completely new, the wine is powerful and with recognizable aromas and tannins (see Tannins). Additionally, the oxygen stabilizes, softens and rounds off the taste. Many producers discard their barriques after 2-3 years.
