Read moreAlcamo is a large, hill-filled area in the northwestern part of Sicily, where the fields are completely covered by vines. The hills are localized in the Alcamo commune, which the zone is named after. Additionally, the zone includes fields in the Trapani and Palermo provinces, from the coast and up to the mountains. The Alcamo vines encompass 10 communes in all.
The majority of production comes from the Catarratto-based white wines, and it used to be that the wines from this region weren't anything to write home about. Now the producers are beginning to make some waves, even though the wines from this hilly region can still only be described as "moving in the right direction".
The wines are based on both international and Sicilian grapes, where especially Catarratto dominates. The Rapitalà winery is particularly a cut above the rest.
