Most of the coastal area west of Genoa falls within Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC, the largest zone in Liguria. The area is stretching from Genoa to the French border. Along the way, there are overlaps with the other more known zone in the region, Rossese di Dolceacqua DOC. Apart from Genoa, the zone includes the provinces of Imperia and Savona.
In Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC is the main theme white wine and the general rule is that the most elegant wines come from the highest altitude vineyards (about 400 meters), while the more aromatic ones are found in the coastal regions.
The most interesting white wines are made of the grape Pigato, a distant relative of Vermentino variety. The red wine, based on the Rossese variety, can be quite elegant from some producers. Passito dessert wines are also produced in Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC.
If the wines are made of grapes grown in the zone specifically indicated in the production code, they can be identified with one of the following geographical subzones: Albenga (Albenganese) in the Savona province, Finale (Finalese) in the Savona province and Riviera dei Fiori in the Imperia province.
